What is Ivrit La-Inyan?
Ivrit La-Inyan is the gap-year classroom edition of Ulpan La-Inyan.
This program takes yeshiva, seminary and gap-year students beyond reading, writing and grammar exercises, enabling them to actually speak Hebrew - with confidence, enjoyment and growing sophistication.
Educational programs that have run Ivrit La-Inyan include Yeshivat Shvilei Hatorah, Yeshivat Hakotel, Aardvark Israel Immersion Programs, Midreshet Moriah, and the Israel Government Fellows at the Begin Center.
Goals
The goal of Ivrit La-Inyan (Hebrew, straight to the point) is to grant English-speaking Jewish youth from the diaspora the ability to communicate in Modern Hebrew, the language of their people.
Under the assumption that foreign language acquisition begins with speech, this course develops the skills of oral communication as the basis for reading and writing (though these components are integrated throughout the course as well).
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to carry a conversation at their level in Modern Hebrew with confidence, as well as read and write using the core vocabulary they have acquired.
Throughout the year, class consists of a 20-30-minute targeted, interactive, electronic-media-supported speaking-and-listening module (sample clip here).
After that module, students are exposed to the textual version of the linguistic units they are acquiring through reading presentations (sample reading lesson here).
For the remainder of class time, the instructor guides the students in practicing the vocabulary they have just acquired, discussions that grow in sophistication as the year progresses.
When they go home, students complete exercises (here's a sample) that hone the theoretical concepts behind the engaging conversations in which they're participating in the classroom. These materials are available online, but they can also be printed.
Ivrit La-Inyan calls upon students to listen, speak, read and write. Since the course invokes auditory, visual and kinesthetic faculties, it appeals to students with a variety of learning strengths, including those with disabilities.
Teaching Style and Teacher's Investment
The instructor teaches from a laptop computer: the speaking-and-listening module is a written script located in an electronic document, from which the instructor reads and sounds audio files linked to the document. Exams will be provided to the instructor as well, thus demanding very little preparation.
Our Mission
At Ulpan La-Inyan, we believe that all Jews have a birthright to the language of their people. Our mission is to provide them access to that birthright.
