What is Ivrit La-Inyan?

Ivrit La-Inyan is the high-school, junior high-school and gap-year classroom edition of Ulpan La-Inyan.

This program takes yeshivas and Hebrew day school students beyond reading, writing and grammar exercises, enabling them to actually speak Hebrew - with confidence, enjoyment and growing sophistication.

Schools currently running Ivrit La-Inyan include Yeshiva University High School of Los Angeles and the Ashrei program of Sulam Yaakov.

Goals

The goal of Ivrit La-Inyan (Hebrew, straight to the point) is to grant English-speaking Jewish youth in the diaspora the ability to communicate in Modern Hebrew, the language of their people.

Under the assumption that foreign language acquisition begins with speech, this course develops the skills of oral communication as the basis for reading and writing (though these components are integrated throughout the course as well).

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to carry a casual conversation in Modern Hebrew with confidence, as well as read and write using the core vocabulary they have acquired.

Ivrit La-Inyan offers, at present, a one-year introductory course intended for junior high and high school classes of any grade level.

Course Contents

Throughout the year, class consists of a 20-30-minute targeted, interactive, electronic-media-supported speaking-and-listening module (sample clip here).

After that module, students are exposed to the textual version of the linguistic units they are acquiring through reading presentations (sample reading lesson here).

For the remainder of class time, the instructor guides the students in practicing the vocabulary they have just acquired, discussions that grow in sophistication as the year progresses.

When they go home, students complete exercises (here's a sample) that hone the theoretical concepts behind the fun-filled conversations in which they're participating in the classroom. These materials are online, so as to cut down on the use of paper, toxins and costs. Students use a variety of electronic resources to complete their tasks, as well as the revolutionary book for Hebrew vocabulary building, English Hebrew by Subject.

Student Audience

Ivrit La-Inyan calls upon students to listen, speak, read and write. Since the course invokes auditory, visual and kinesthetic faculties, it appeals to students with a variety of learning strengths, including those with disabilities.

Teaching Style and Teacher's Investment

The instructor teaches from a laptop computer: the speaking-and-listening module is a written script located in a Word or OpenOffice document, from which the instructor reads and sounds audio files linked to the document. Exams will be provided to the instructor as well, thus demanding very little preparation.

Cost

We are offering an introductory price of $60 US per student ($2000 minimum per school) for the 2010-2011 academic year. A deposit of $1000 is due June 1, 2010.

This price includes all class materials - including those electronic as well as English Hebrew by Subject - for both the student and the instructor. It also includes instructor training and ongoing consultation.

Our Mission

At Ulpan La-Inyan, we believe that all Jews have a birthright to the language of their people. Our mission is to provide them access to that birthright, “removing the language barrier.”

Should you wish to inquire further, please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you!
