The Seven Hebrew Verb Forms שבעת הבניינים

Hebrew verbs fall into seven structural patterns, or בניינים. These patterns are easily recognizable, once you get the hang of them.

Here’s a table that categorizes the seven בניינים. This categorization is a rule of thumb; it’s not always true, but it should help you make more sense of Hebrew verbs and start to gain mastery over their use.

Simple Intensive Causative
Active פָּעַל פִּעֵל הִפְעִיל
Passive נִפְעַל פֻּעַל הֻפְעַל
Reflexive הִתְפַּעֵל
