If you’ve lived in Israel or have taken Level 2 of Ulpan La-Inyan, you’re familiar with the term for ID card – תְּעוּדַת זְהוּת (teh-oo-DAHT zeh-HOOT).
The word זהות itself means identity. Its root is זֶה (zeh), which means this. Identity is “this-ness.”
Today, perhaps more so than ever, it’s critical that Jews align themselves with their זהות – because if we don’t, there are those who will tell us how to align ourselves, such as Helen Thomas who thinks the Jews should abandon “occupied Palestine” (by the way, there never was an Arab Palestine) and go back to our home – Poland and Germany (the “home” that slaughtered six million of us).
We need to know who we are – where we are from and what defines us as a people.
