How to Say “A Matter Of Life And Death” in Hebrew – Ulpan La-Inyan

Back in 2008, I named my Hebrew school Ulpan La-Inyan – אולפן לעניין
. While אולפן
today refers to Hebrew-language school (also studio), לעניין
means to the point.
לעניין
is composed of -ל
(to the) and עניין
(matter, point).
To say “it’s a matter of…”, use זה עניין של
, as in:
זה רק עניין של זמן.
It’s only a matter of time.
Likewise, a matter of life and death is עניין של חיים ומוות
.
For example:
אם זה לא עניין של חיים ומוות, אל תעירו אותי.
If it isn’t a matter of life and death, don’t wake me up.
