אֶזְרַח

The Torah portion to be read this week by Jews around the world tells the story of the Exodus from Egypt. As those who have attended a סֵדֶר פֶּסַח listen and repeat Passover seder – know, the People of Israel rose and left the enslaving nation after a hearty meal of lamb, which became the law for all future generations, for all citizens of Israel in Temple times.

The Hebrew word for citizen is אֶזְרַח listen and repeat for a male and אֶזְרָחִית listen and repeat for a female.

Citizenship is אֶזְרָחוּת listen and repeat , and to become a citizen is לְהִתְאַזְרֵחַ listen and repeat , where the four-letter word אזרח is plugged into the active-intensive verb form.

For example:

אַחֲרֵי שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים בָּאָרֶץ, הִיא הֶחְלִיטָה לְהִתְאַזְרֵחַ.
After seven years in the country, she decided to become a citizen.
