How to Say “Contradiction” in Hebrew – Ulpan La-Inyan
סְתִירָה
The
simple verb
לסתור
originally meant to destroy that which was built. Today we use להרוס
instead, as in:
צריך להרוס את המבנה הישן כדי לבנות את החדש.
(One) need(s) to destroy the old structure in order to build the new one.
Today we use לסתור
primarily to mean “to contradict” (a sort of destruction).
For example:
הוא תמיד סותר את מה שאני אומרת.
He always contradicts what I (a female) say.
A contradiction is סתירה
, though don’t confuse it with
סטירה – a slap
.
