This one’s for Abi S, who asked to know the difference between comfortable and convenient in Hebrew.


Truth is, we use the same word for both: נוֹח (NOH-ahkh).


For example, you could say either:
נוֹחַ לִי עַל הַסַּפָּה (NOH-ahkh lee ahl hah-sah-PAH) – I’m comfortable (literally, it’s comfortable for me) on the sofa.
or
תֵּשַׁע בָּעֶרֶב זֶה זְמַן נוֹחַ לִי לְהִפָּגֵש (TEH-shah bah-EH-rev zeh zmahn NOH-ahkh lee leh-hee-pah-GHESH) – 9pm is a convenient time for me to meet.

Convenience or comfort is נוֹחוּת (noh-KHOOT).


Another example – at Ulpan La-Inyan we try to offer classes בִּזְמָנִים נוֹחִים – at convenient times (bee-zmah-NEEM noh-KHEEM). Let us know what times are נוחים for you.


This word is vaguely related to the name Noah, which is spelled in Hebrew נֹח without the vav in the middle.
