how to say “countdown” in Hebrew

In English, we call it a countdown because we count down to the number zero.
Hebrew, however, renders it like some European languages do – a backwards count, or ספירה לאחור
.
For example:
החלה הספירה לאחור לקראת שיגור החללית!
The countdown has begun for the launch of the space shuttle!

ספירה
– a count – is the noun form of the simple verb לספור
– to count.
לאחור
means to the back – or backwards, in this case.
