How to Say “Faculty” in Hebrew – Ulpan La-Inyan
סֶגֶל
The Hebrew word for team is צוות
, while a staff is מטה
:
אצלנו בחברה יש כמאה מורים ושנים עשר עובדים במטה.
At our company there are about a hundred teachers and twelve employees on (operational) staff.
For a university senior staff or faculty, there is a special word – סגל
(there’s also the borrowed word פקולטה
).
For example:
היא עבדה קשה כמה שנים, ועכשיו התקבלה לסגל האוניברסיטה.
She worked hard for several years, and now she’s been accepted to the university faculty.
סגל
forms the three-letter root of סגולה
– virtue or treasure (as in עם סגולה
– the Chosen People). It also gives us
מסוגל
– capable
.
