How to Say “Famous” in Hebrew – Ulpan La-Inyan

The Hebrew word for famous is מפורסמת
for a female and מפורסם
for a male.
For example:
כשהייתי ילד, החלום שלי היה להיות מפורסם.
When I was a kid, my dream was to be famous.
(I grew up, after all, in Los Angeles.)
מפורסם
and מפורסמת
belong to the פועל pattern, which means that they are passive versions of the פיעל verb לפרסם
– to publicize. The root of these words is פ.ר.ס.מ
– a four-letter root, while most Hebrew roots have three letters. Why four letters? Because this root isn’t originally a Hebrew one: it derives from the Greek word πᾰρρησῐ́ᾱ (parrhēsíā) meaning “public” or “publicly”.
Another related word is פרסומת – advertisement
or commercial.
