מְלוֹן פְּאֵר

A Hebrew student recently said to me, over lunch, אני אוהב לאכול מָלון
. He meant to tell me that he’s likes eating melon (מֶלון
), but what came out was I like eating a hotel. We had a good laugh.

luxury hotel is מלון פאר
, as in:

אין לנו תקציב למלונות פאר!

We don’t have (the) budget for luxury hotels!

פאר
means luxury in the case of the good life, though it also means glory. The three letters that make up פאר are also the root of תפארת
splendor. Both words are used as names, with פאר usually for boys, and תפארת for girls.

Now, you may have noticed that while מלון
hotel, when it stands alone, is with an ah sound, but מלון when appearing in the phrase מלון פאר
is with an eh sound – like the melon. To find out why, watch today’s video.
