how to say “guy” and “gal” in Hebrew

בָּחוּר, בַּחוּרָה

The Hebrew word for young man or guy is בחור , while his female counterpart is a בחורה .

For example:

הוא בחור נבון ומכיל.

He’s a wise and sensitive young man.

Now, בחור and בחורה technically mean young man/woman, but they’ve been known to refer to a person who’s not so young as well, just like guy and gal (or girl) might.

The root of these words is ב.ח.ר meaning choice: in Biblical Hebrew, a בחור is a young man, someone worthy of being chosen for his being in his prime.
