How to Say “Home Front” in Hebrew – Ulpan La-Inyan

While neck in Hebrew is צוואר
(collar is צווארון
), the back of a neck – a nape – is עורף
.
עורף
gives us the Hebrew word for home front – העורף
(literally, the nape). How so? Consider a human head. The face is the front, like the front line – החזית
. In the back is the nape, העורף
. Soldiers בחזית
– at the front – protect civilians “in the back”, away from the front – בעורף
(unless the civilians are used as human shields, which is Hamas’s most devastating battle tactic).
In a Hebrew sentence:
החיילים בחזית מגנים על האזרחים בעורף.
The soldiers at the front line protect civilians at home (at the homefront).
Home-front command is פיקוד העורף
.
