How to Say “Perfect” in Hebrew – Ulpan La-Inyan

Sometimes people exaggerate with the English word perfect, as in “You brought quiche? Oh, perfect!”
Israelis do the same with Hebrew’s מושלם
.
For example:
מושלם, מושלם! אתה פשוט מושלם.
Perfect, perfect! You’re simply perfect. (spoken to a male)
מושלם
comes from the root ש.ל.מ
meaning wholeness, the same root as that of לשלם
– to pay (to “complete” a transaction) and שלום
– peace.
Now, מושלם
is the preferred word in Modern Hebrew. Biblical Hebrew uses another word – תמים
– to say “perfect in simplicity”, but Israelis today harp on the “simplicity” aspect, using תמים
to mean “naive.”
