The root ש.ק.פ
has to do with visibility. In Biblical Hebrew it means visible or translucent (light goes through it), though in Modern Hebrew it has come to mean transparent (see-through). This root appears in words like להשקיף
– to view/observe; as well as שקף

A reflection is השתקפות
, as in:
החתול לא מבין שהחתול שמסתכל עליו (במראה) הוא בעצם השתקפות של עצמו.
The cat doesn’t understand that the cat looking at (in the mirror) is actually a reflection of itself.

is the noun form of להשתקף
– to be reflected, a
התפעל “reflexive” verb.
