How to Say “Thorny” in Hebrew – Ulpan La-Inyan
קוֹצָנִי
A thorn is קוץ
, while thorns are קוצים
.
For example:
קשה ללכת בשביל הזה – יש בו הרבה קוצים.
It’s hard to walk on this path – it has a lot of thorns.
Something thorny is קוצני
, so one might restate the above with:
קשה ללכת בשביל הזה – הוא מאוד קוצני.
It’s hard to walk on this path – it’s very thorny.
While in English we might speak of a “thorny issue”, that metaphor doesn’t work in Hebrew. Instead, Israelis might use נושא רגיש
– a sensitive topic.
קוצני
looks like it might have the same root as
קצה
–
edge, but it doesn’t: while the root of קוצני
is ק.ו.צ
, that of קצה
is the three letters making up the word – ק.צ.ה
.
