how to say “upload” and “download” in Hebrew

לְהַעֲלוֹת, לְהוֹרִיד

As people who have made aliyah – immigrated to Israel – can tell you, to go up is the simple verb לעלות
.

For example:

עלינו לארץ לפני חצי שנה.

We made aliyah (“went up”) to Israel half a year ago.

To raise (something) up – or to upload – is להעלות
, a הפעיל verb.

For example:

אני רק מעלה את הקבצים, ייקח כמה דקות.

I’m just uploading the files – it’ll take a few minutes.

Likewise, לרדת
is the simple verb meaning to go down, while להוריד
is the הפעיל verb meaning to take down… or to download.

For example:

פעם היינו מורידים סרטים למחשב, אבל היום יש סטרימינג.

We used to download movies to the computer, but today there’s streaming.
