שֵׁמַע, אוֹדְיוֹ

The word for to hear in Hebrew is the simple verb לשמוע .

For example:

אני לא שומע אותך.

I (a male) don’t hear you (a female).

The root of לשמוע is ש.מ.ע . If you know basic Jewish liturgy, then you certainly recognize the root from the daily prayer, שמע ישראל Hear, O Israel.

The root also forms the word for audioשמע .

For example:

תשלחי לי בבקשה את קבצי השמע.

Please send me the audio files (spoken to a female).

A single audio file is קובץ שמע .

Although the use of שמע meaning audio is widespread, Israelis are wont to use אודיו instead.
