how to say “to exchange words” in Hebrew

לְהַחְלִיף מִלָּה

Hebrew has lots of verbs that have to do with talking, such as:

לדבר – to speak

לשוחח – to converse

להביע – to express

A nice, handy expression for to speak with or to have a word with someone is להחליף מילה – literally, to exchange a word.

For example:

עבר כבר שבוע ולא החלפנו מילה.

Already a week has passed and we haven’t exchanged a word.

להחליף is a הפעיל verb of the root ח.ל.פ meaning to pass by.

After having studied literature and linguistics on the bachelors level and psychology on the masters, Ami decided to draw upon his hobby of learning languages, his understanding of human thought processes and his skill of explaining complex ideas in simple terms, to found a program that enables people to speak Hebrew with confidence.
