I often like to compare Hebrew words with words of similar sounds and origins in other languages. For example, wine in Hebrew is יין
(a winery is יקב
), while in Spanish it’s vino and in Japanese it’s ワイン (wain) – all sounding quite similar.
Hebrew’s word for parsley is פטרוזיליה
, which sounds like its German (Petersilie‏‏‏‏) counterpart. But the word, which comes from the Greek πετροσέλῑνον (petrosélīnon), sounds most like the Esperanto petroselo,‏‏‏‏ among modern languages (Wiktionary).
Anyway, here’s פטרוזיליה
in context:
בתור כרפס בליל הסדר אצלנו במשפחה משתמשים בפטרוזיליה.
As “karpas” on the Seder night our family uses (in our family, we use) parsley.
