In Hebrew, instead of “a long time ago”, we say לפני הרבה זמן
– literally, before a lot of time.
For example:
הייתי כאן פעם, אבל זה היה לפני הרבה זמן.
I’ve been here before, but that was a long time ago.
Well, לפני הרבה זמן
is one option. Another is מזמן
– literally, “from time”:
הסיפור הזה קרה מזמן, כשהייתי ילד קטן.
This story happened a long time ago, when I was a little boy.
This word מזמן
also means “in a long time”, as in:
מזמן לא נפגשנו.
We haven’t met up in a long time.
What about once upon a time? That’s היו היה
, as in:
היו היה, בארץ רחוקה…
Once upon a time, in a faraway land…
