During summer in the Arctic Circle, it’s dark for only a short time every night – if at all. These sleepless nights have gained the name white night – first in French – nuit blanche, and eventually in Hebrew – לילה לבן
.
For example:
בחג השבועות הרבה אנשים עושים לילה לבן ולומדים תורה כל הלילה.
On Shavuot lots of people pull an all-nighter and study Torah the whole night.
Even though it has an ה
– ending, לילה
is grammatically masculine. Thus it’s לילה לבן
and not לילה לבנה
.
Here’s a post on the Hebrew words for all the major colors.
חג שבועות שמח
– Happy Shavuot!
