How to Say “Arms” in Hebrew – Ulpan La-Inyan

The Hebrew word for hand is יד
, while two hands are ידיים
. These words work for “arm” and “arms” as well, for example:
הידיים שלו שזופות.
His arms are tan.
ידיים
follows the tendency for body parts that come in pairs to have the יים
– ending, which is reserved for things that come in twos. Not so the word that refers specifically to “arm”, which you may recognize from the Passover Seder: זרוע
. Its plural form is זרועות
– with the ות-
ending.
For example:
קיבלו אותי בזרועות פתוחות.
(They) accepted me with open arms.
