In the USA, it’s called a crosswalk. In the UK, it’s called a zebra crossing.
In Israel, it’s called a מעבר חצייה
, as in:
חשוב להאט לפני מעבר חצייה.
It’s important to slow down before a crosswalk.
מעבר
comes from the root ע.ב.ר
, meaning transition. And חצייה
comes from the root ח.צ.י
, meaning half.
What does half have to do with crossing?
Think about it this way: when you cross the street, you’re effectively splitting it in two – or in half… like the Children of Israel did with the Red Sea.
