How do you say date in Hebrew? Depends on what kind.
The word for date as in a spot on the calendar that specifies things like the day, the month and the year, is תאריך
.
For example:
תשעה באב הוא תאריך עצוב בלוח השנה העברי.
Tisha B’Av is a sad day on the Hebrew calendar.
The word תאריך
looks Semitic, but it doesn’t appear in Biblical or Rabbinic Hebrew. Rather, it comes from the Arabic word for date – also the word for history – تاريخ (taa-REEKH).
Now, what if the date you’re referring to is a meeting, perhaps a romantic one? Here you have two options: the authentically-Hebrew פגישה
and the borrowed word דייט
For example:
קבעתי איתה פגישה.
I set a date with her.
And:
יש לנו דייט ביום שני.
We have a date on Monday.
While פגישה
can refer to any kind of meeting, דייט
only refers to meetings of a romantic nature.
