How to Say “Deli” in Hebrew – Ulpan La-Inyan

A delicate piece of food is often delicious, perhaps invoking heavenly, Edenic feelings. Thus we have the Modern Hebrew word מעדנייה
– a deli or delicatessen – whose three-letter root is the word עדן
– Eden.
For example:
קניתי את הגבינה הזאת במעדנייה בסופר.
I bought this cheese at the deli counter at the supermarket.
Note that in Israeli supermarkets the cheeses and meats are sold separately for kosher reasons. Thus we have מעדנייה
for the dairy delicacies, while the meats can be found at the קצבייה
– the butcher’s counter.
