The Hebrew word גוון
refers to a shade or variety of a color. Likewise, something varied or diverse is מגוון
, as in:
חברת הקייטרינג מציעה מנות טעימות ומגוונות.
The catering company offers tasty and varied dishes.
מגוון
is a passive פועל form of the פיעל verb לגוון
– to vary or diversify:
כדאי לגוון במכשירים פיננסיים.
It is worth diversifying (your) financial instruments.
לגוון
, in turn, brings us the word for variety – diversity – in general: גיוון
.
For example:
גיוון הוא טעם החיים.
Variety is the spice (flavor) of life.
Mind you, while they’ll understand it, Israelis don’t use this expression nearly as often as English speakers do.
