אַל תִּתְבַּיֵּישׁ

בושה

is the Hebrew word for shame, of the root ב.ו.ש
. So it makes sense that the התפעל verb להתבייש
means to be embarrassed or to be shy.

This word finds expression most commonly in the Israeli invitation of hospitality: אל תתבייש

don’t be embarrassed or don’t be shy (spoken to a male; to a female it’s אל תתביישי
, and to more than one person it’s אל תתביישו
).

For example:

אתם עוד רעבים? אל תתביישו! קחו מה שאתם רוצים!

You guys still hungry? Don’t be shy! Take whatever you want!
