While glass in Hebrew is זכוכית
, glasses are משקפיים
. The word comes from the root ש.ק.פ
meaning clear: after all, glasses help us see more clearly.
In context:
שכחתי באוטו את המשקפיים שלי!
I forgot my glasses in the car!
In English, it’s clear that “glasses” in “I forgot my glasses in the car” refer to eyeglasses and not, say, shot glasses. If you want to say eyeglasses in Hebrew, the term is משקפי ראייה
– literally, sight glasses.
And if you want to talk about sunglasses, those are משקפי שמש
, where שמש
means sun.
