Ever have one of those weeks where the schedule is so packed or the jet lag is so real that you feel like you can’t even remember your own name? In Hebrew, that would be אני אפילו לא זוכר איך קוראים לי
if you’re male, and אני אפילו לא זוכרת איך קוראים לי
if you’re female. It means literally, “I even don’t remember how they call me.”
There is an important linguistic nuance here. In English, we often say I can’t remember. However, in Hebrew, we say אני לא זוכר
— I DON’T remember. This applies to many expressions where English uses can’t — for example, I can’t see is simply אני לא רואֶה/רואָה
(I don’t see – masculine/feminine), and I can’t hear is אני לא שומע/שומעת
(I don’t hear – masculine/feminine). Using אני לא יכול/יכולה
(I can’t – masculine/feminine) usually implies a physical or medical inability rather than a mental lapse.
In context:
מרוב עומס בעבודה, אני אפילו לא זוכרת איך קוראים לי.
From all the workload at the office, I can’t even remember my name (f).
The expression אני אפילו לא זוכר איך קוראים לי
— I can’t even remember my name is a Level 4 expression in the Ulpan La-Inyan system.
