In English, we call the native inhabitants of a land indigenous. We might also call them “children of the land.”
Hebrew uses the same root – י.ל.ד
– for all three of these words, native, indigenous and child:
הילד הזה הוא יליד העיר.
This boy is a city native.
And:
המשפחה שלו היא ילידית לאדמה הזאת.
His family is indigenous to this land.
Indigenous is ילידי
when describing something or someone grammatically masculine, while ילידית
is feminine.
