The Hebrew word for mud – בוץ
– appears only once in the Hebrew Bible. Today, though, we hear it in everyday conversation, not only about getting our shoes and clothes dirty:
ילדים, לא לשחק בבוץ!
Kids, don’t play in the mud!
…but also about muddy situations:
תראי לאיזה בוץ הכניסו אותנו.
Look what mud they got us into. (spoken to a female)
בוץ
, which originally meant soft and impressible, may be related to the word for egg – ביצה
.
