פִּרְסוֹמוֹת

Hebrew has two words that refer to an advertisement or an adמודעה

and פרסומת
.

מודעה can mean any kind of ad.

For example:

ראיתי מודעה שאתם מחפשים מורים.

I saw an ad that you’re looking for teachers.

and

יש יותר מדי מודעות אבל בעיתון הזה.

There are too many obituaries in this newspaper.

מודעה comes from the authentic Hebrew root י.ד.ע

meaning knowledge.

Then there’s פרסומת, whose root פ.ר.ס.מ

is borrowed from an unknown non-Semitic language. פרסומת refers to the kind of ad you’ll see on TV or hear on the radio. It’s an ad of a more… commercial quality.

For example:

תרימי אלי טלפון בפרסומות.

Give me a call (spoken to a female) during the commercials.
