עִירִיָּיה
If the Hebrew word for city is עיר
, then the word for municipality – or city hall – is עירייה
, as in:
הייתה נזילה בברזייה בגן הציבורי, אז התקשרתי לעירייה.
There was a leak in the faucet in the drinking fountain in the public park, so I called the municipality.
(Look how much more concise Hebrew is than English – 8 words in the Hebrew and 20 words in the English.)
Don’t confuse עירייה
with עיירה
–
town
. עיירות
– towns – in Israel don’t have an עירייה
– rather, they have a מועצה מקומית
– a
local
council, or a מועצה אזורית
– regional council.
