The Hebrew word for sight – ראייה
– comes from לראות
– to see. Likewise, the word for hearing – שמיעה
– comes from לשמוע
– to hear. לראות
and לשמוע
are simple verbs.
For example:
היא לומדת בעיקר דרך האוזניים, באמצעות חוש השמיעה.
She learns mostly through her (the) ears, by way of her (the) sense of hearing.
Now, שמיעה
refers to hearing in the physical sense. If, though, you want to talk about the type of hearing that might take place in court or in an office, the word is שימוע
.
For example:
קבעו לו שימוע לחודש הבא.
They set a hearing for him for next month.
You might recognize the root of these words – the three letters ש.מ.ע
– from  שמע ישראל
– Hear O Israel.
