To think, in Hebrew, is לחשוב
, a simple verb.
For example:
אני חושב, משמע אני קיים.
I think, therefore I am. (spoken by a male)
And:
אני חושבת, משמע אני קיימת.
(Same translation, spoken by a female)
But when we say “I think,” we’re often implying that we’re not 100% sure about something. Here, in Hebrew, you’re more likely to hear people using נראה לי
– literally, it seems to me.
For example:
נראה לי שאת צודקת.
I think you’re right. (spoken to a female)
Now, we’ve seen (excuse the pun) that נראה
means “we will see.” But depending on the context, such as our example here about her being right, it can also mean “it seems.” In our case, נראה
is not a version of לראות
, but rather of להיראות
– literally, to be seen. It’s a נפעל verb, not a simple verb. The נ
at the beginning of the word does not indicate אנחנו
, but rather the נפעל
verb form.
