Ever walked into an elevator and lost your call? In Hebrew, you’d say you have no קליטה – reception.
As we saw with the word for “catchy,” the root here is ק.ל.ט (to absorb/receive). Your phone “receives” the signal, so the quality of that signal is your קליטה.
This is a very busy word in Hebrew! We use it for קליטת עלייה (the absorption of immigrants) and also for how quickly someone “gets” or understands a new concept. If you’re a quick learner, people might say you have a קליטה מהירה – quick understanding.
In context:
סליחה, אני לא שומע אותך טוב, אין לי קליטה פה.
Sorry, I can’t hear you well, I don’t have reception here. (spoken to a male)
The word קליטה comes from the simple verb לקלוט – to receive/absorb.
Now, קליטה is reception when referring to a phone signal. Reception at a hotel is קבלת קהל, and at a wedding party, קבלת פנים.
