Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is an Ulpan?

An Ulpan is an institute or program in Israel dedicated to teaching Hebrew to new immigrants and residents. The term “Ulpan” originates from the Aramaic word meaning “the act of study.” At Ulpan La-Inyan, we focus on helping students speak Hebrew with confidence and accuracy.

“La-Inyan” (לעניין) translates to “straight to the point” in Hebrew. This reflects our teaching philosophy of delivering focused and effective Hebrew instruction.

Ulpan La-Inyan was founded by Ami Steinberger. Raised in the United States with an Israeli father, Ami spoke Hebrew fluently from a young age. After moving to Israel, he noticed many English-speaking immigrants struggled with Hebrew conversation despite attending traditional ulpans. This observation inspired him to develop a method focused on building students’ confidence in speaking Hebrew. What began as a small group in his Jerusalem apartment has grown into a program serving thousands of learners worldwide.

Ora Derovan serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Ulpan La-Inyan. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Master’s in Jewish Studies. Having made aliyah at the age of 15 and becoming fluent in Hebrew, Ora has over twenty years of experience in Jewish education. Her personal journey with the Hebrew language fuels her passion to help others achieve fluency.

Our methodology emphasizes core spoken vocabulary, anticipation, graduated interval recall, and organic learning. This approach ensures that students actively recall and use new words and phrases in real-life contexts, promoting long-term retention and conversational confidence.
