“To cease” is a fancy way of saying “to stop”. Thus a ceasefire in Hebrew is הפסקת אש – literally, a stopping of fire.
For example:
מתנהל משא ומתן על הפסקת אש.
Negotiation is underway (is being conducted) for a ceasefire.
הפסקה comes from the הפעיל verb להפסיק, to stop doing something. Another word for to stop is the פעל verb לעצור, but this refers to stopping so that one stands in place, as in:
עצרתי ברמזור.
I stopped at the traffic light.
