How to Say “Ceasefire” in Hebrew – Ulpan La-Inyan

“To cease” is a fancy way of saying “to stop”. Thus a ceasefire in Hebrew is הפסקת אש
– literally, a stopping of fire.
For example:
מתנהל משא ומתן על הפסקת אש.
Negotiation is underway (is being conducted) for a ceasefire.

הפסקה
comes from the הפעיל verb להפסיק
, to stop doing something. Another word for to stop is the פעל verb לעצור
, but this refers to stopping so that one stands in place, as in:
עצרתי ברמזור.
I stopped at the traffic light.
